Whirlgig for Dance Places' Arts Park

KanKouran West African Dance Company is a group very familiar to Dance Place and was probably one of the first dance company’s Carla invited to perform at Dance Place almost 30 years ago. The whirligig design depicts a KanKouran dancer performing a “Peaceful Fighter” dance that celebrates Martin Luther King’s Birthday.  The sculpture captures the traditional whirligig design—a figure with arms spinning-- that draws upon the American folk crafts tradition.
