Red Head Sculpture at Innovation Center Station Metro Garage, Herndon, VA, WMATA Station

Charles Bergen Studios is proposing a large steel head bust that will be placed at the open area between the rain garden in front of the garage, the board walk, and the kiss-and-ride entry. Placed on an eighteen-inch tall concrete base the head which is painted red tilts up towards the sky and is painted red with an anti-graffiti clear coat. Lit at night with energy efficient LED tape lights is visible from a distance.  The sculpture is approximately twenty-foot tall, seven-foot wide at the base, fourteen-feet from tip of nose to back of head and six-inches thick placed on three-foot-wide by ten-foot long concrete base. The artwork is made up of 6” x 6” steel tubes and has an approximately 500 sf surface area.

On the side visible from the boardwalk the supporting six-inch tube steel structure of the Artwork is left uncovered and exposed. The patterns, shadows and forms of this open and uncovered side are symbolic of the technology, infrastructure and engineering.  On the side of the head facing the new Herndon Silver Line Station and the Parking Garage are two large circles whose forms are literally the gears inside a head that whir as someone thinks.  With all these interconnecting forms and elements, this side of Red Head would symbolize creative innovation and 21st Century Urban Living-- thinking, moving, and connecting but still having moments to think, be inspired and connect with the outdoors and others.
